The days aren't long enough...

Wake up, eat, drive, work, drive, eat, tidy up, bath time, bedtime and end day. This is the way our days go, never long enough and always too short. I don't get half of what I want to get done in a day and am always just a little sleep deprived. Mind you, there is always another day and the next day does creep up oh so quickly. But what happens when the next day just isn't enough?

Since having two children I have found that there truly is not enough time in a day. There are many many reasons for this - my desire to constantly keep myself busy, my strong focus and goal orientation, my inability to ask for help and the list just goes on. Perhaps it is because we live in a society that is constantly on the hustle and bustle. Run here, jog there, jump up there. Perhaps it is the constant pressure from our family, friends, coworkers - the continual comparing and competing. What can your child do? How much does he weigh? What size of clothes is she wearing? Is she walking yet? He isn't eating solid foods yet?

I find myself constantly reexamining my life and the way I pass my time. Hoping to make changes, trying so hard to make changes and make life simpler, easier and slower. But something always takes precedence. A bathroom needing to be cleaned, a phone call being answered, an email to be written.

How do you spend your time and how do you slow down your time? What tips, ideas and strategies do you use to live a slow family life? I am all ears and hopeful that one day life will just be...

Play - what's this?

I am currently reading the bookPlayful Parentingby Lawrence Cohen. The book discusses the importance of connecting with children at their level and becoming an active part of their world, imagination and life. Strategies for building confidence, problem solving and connecting with your child are scattered throughout the book.

I love reading books like this because I find they give me an opportunity to rethink my parenting styles, goals and values. Why as adults do we spend so little time playing? Why do we ignore children's requests to play with them? Of course, there is nothing wrong with allowing our children to play independently - after all it develops independence and confidence. But, I often wonder why at such a young age must they be so independent? We seem to be rushing our children through life at a pace that will inevitably lead to added stress, anxiety and ultimately dependence.

Lately, we have been in rut! Jamin started back to work three week ago after being on parental leave for 8 months. Now we are left with adjusting to a new schedule (one which is really not how we would like it to be, but hey we have to pay the bills somehow!). As such, we have been spending most of our weekends catching up - on laundry, groceries, cleaning, painting, and all the other chores that don't get done during the week anymore. Unfortunately, this has resulted in little time spent playing, enjoying the weather and connecting with the kids. That being said, our goal for the fall is of course to spend more time playing. We are making it our family goal to leave weekends to exploring, naturing, adventuring, and ultimately playing! Chores will be left for evenings when the kids are in bed (which means no relaxing time for mom and dad sadly). We will see how this goes and we have one final weekend of chores - Ryann's 1st Birthday party is Sunday which result in a Saturday filled with cleaning, baking, designing, and planning.

Here we are!

Moved into our new space. After severals days of packing, heaving lifting, shifting, organizing, pricing, modifying, assembling and decorating, we are here!!! We have been planning and formulating this move since January and thank goodness it is finally here. Lots of time, discussions, worries, love, care and sweat has gone into this move.

We are so excited to be offering a variety of new services, products and support for Kingston mamas. Join us daily for tea, coffee and treats. Bring your friends, babies and children to sit back and relax.

A natural parenting resource library is in the works. We want you to be able to learn all you can about natural parenting, breastfeeding, cosleeping, attachment parenting, cloth diapering, babywearing. homebirthing, midwifing (is that a word?), and you name it. Our library is a work in progress and we will slowly be adding resources. Start small and build big! If you have any books that you would be interested in donating, we would greatly appreciate them!

Check out our new addition in our lovely, clean bathroom - the Diaper Sprayer! Feel free to test it out or take a peek to see exactly how you will benefit from this awesome cloth diapering accessory.

As always, we are continuing our cloth diaper and baby wearing loan program. If you have not heard about this, please feel free to ask. Both provide an excellent opportunity to trial our many diaper styles and carrier options.

We are also working on a newborn loan service that will benefit new moms wanting to use cloth from the get go. Details will be coming soon, but we are extremely excited about this. Note: I wish I could claim stakes in this wicked idea, but unfortunately I came across this service on a few other cloth diaper sites.

Pregnancy Pick Me Up

Try one of these two drinks (recipe courtesy ofMotheringMagazine). It is a great drink for relieving morning sickness and helps to restore the body?s balance after vomiting or diarrhea. It also helps keep electrolytes high and is good to drink during labor.

*1 teaspoon salt
*1 crushed dolomite (calcium/magnesium carbonate) tablet

Pour over ice and sip slowly. Stir in enough water to make 1 quart of solution

A variation: For those who experience low blood sugar, which may contribute to extreme nausea in pregnancy, try this simple drink.
*1 teaspoon honey
* 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Stir into a glass of warm water and sip.

This mixture can be made and drunk throughout the day and if you get up at night.

World Breastfeeding Week!!!

It's World Breastfeeding Week, so go ahead nurse, feed, nourish and love your baby. Here are 2 pics of me breastfeeding Ryann.

Mama Nog

This is a great drink to have at the beginning of your day. The protein gives you energy and the B vitamins are calming and sustaining. Both and yeast and the molasses are good sources of iron. Adapt the drink to your particular tastes and food persuasions. This drink is good throughout pregnancy, during the breastfeeding years, and anytime you need a pick-me-up.

1 cup cow, soy, or rice milk

1 raw egg (optional)

1 tablespoon nutritional yeast (If the drink gives you gas, start with 1 tsp and gradually increase to 1 Tbl)

1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses (again, start with less and build up if the taste is strong for you)

1 tablespoon honey

Mix in a blender until frothy and serve in a chilled glass.

One Small Change

I encourage you all to visit the blog "One Small Change" . The concept is simply - make one environmentally friendly change each month. As titled, the change doesn't have to be big, it can be small and meaningful.

I check this blog every so often and have yet to venture into the following, but our family tries to make regular changes. Eventually, we will have to make monthly resolutions and changes. In the meantime, here are some changes that we have made in the past several years to better our environment, home and family life:

* Organic vegetable gardening in the summer (yummy!)
* Composting - our compost bin is almost full, what will we do in the winter?
* Use reusable diapers (kind of an obvious one, but worth mentioning nonetheless)
* Cleaning our washrooms, kitchens, home, car, etc with vinegar, baking soda and the occasional essential oil.
* Cancelling our cable television, but don't get me wrong, we still have a television and receive many local channels - its a start though.
* Cancelling our internet at home - I do need the internet at work unfortunately, but we have eliminated this at home.
* Making our own baby food.
* Using a reusable menstrual cup (Diva Cup)
* Breastfeeding my children.
* Using a hand push lawn mower
* Taking showers less often (once every two days) and combining showers&baths
* No air conditioning in the summer.
* Keeping the heat at 16 degrees in the winter and wearing lots of sweaters, slippers and blankets
* Growing our own herbs
* Visiting the farmers market as often as possible to buy fresh, local produce
* Buying organic, local produce as often as possible.
* Supporting local businesses as much as we can
* Buying products that are made in Canada first and foremost
